skate comic about shallow-end steps

Going over the steps is a challenge, sometimes easy sometimes difficult but mostly fun. I’ve seen guys doing airs, bonelesses, ollies, pivot to fakie, 50-50 and smith grinding the Glenhaven steps. Best I’ve managed is an accidental frontside revert at Donald.

Pride and Prejudice

skate comic about assumptions

I was inspired by a very pleasant session at Pier Park yesterday with the touring Independent team. Sessioned with Lance Mountain, Jeff Grosso and Al Partanen. When I heard the Independent tour was at the park I was bummed, I figured that meant huge crowds and I wanted to skate. It was hot, air quality was terrible due to high pollen count and smoke from California wildfires but it was fun to skate with those guys. Some rad stuff went down but it was casual.

I was also inspired by this. My mom’s family was interrred during WW2. I hate bigotry. But you can’t beat that World War II style comic prejudice. I didn’t know Green Hornet was a WW2 guy. I know him from the ’60s TV series with Bruce Lee. I’m calling my band, Rampaging Japs.

Be careful out there.

Steve grover battleground flyout may08

The Lincoln City Snake strikes again. Our pal Steve Grover busted himself again this weekend at Sleestock. Broken collarbone and shoulder-blade to you laymen. Best wishes for a speedy recovery dude. Flyouts are much safer than roll-ins.

An Embarrassment of Riches – Summer Solstice Roadtrip 2008

June 27th, 2008

This was my fourth year going on this trip. This year the group was in full disarray. Hailey, Lake Cunningham and Washington State were all possibilities being discussed. In the end, small groups went their separate ways. We started for San Jose but ended up touring southern Oregon and the Oregon coast. Too many choices!

skate comic about skateboarding\'s rich heritage

I would love to learn some new stuff. Some of the kids just amaze me with their abilities. I’m still picking up tricks now and then, admittedly, mostly on the small stuff. It’s fun to learn new tricks.

14 sessions in four days

skate comic about wider localism

Just got back from a four-day road trip. We were going to head for Hailey, Idaho, then we decided to go to the new Lake Cunningham skatepark in San Jose, California. But during a stop in Grants Pass, Oregon - fifty miles from the California border - another friend called with the news that the temperature had reached 113°F in San Jose that day. We rethought our plans. I had never skated the southern Oregon Parks, our friend had a new concrete bowl in his backyard and offered to put us up.

Sounds like the San Jose park is epic but we skated Roseburg, Grants Pass, Jacksonville, Medford, Talent, Ashland, Brookings, Port Orford, Reedsport, Florence, Toledo, and Lincoln City in addition to two good sessions at Matt’s red corvette bowl. I had never skated 10 of those parks or Matt’s before.

I still need to check out those new California parks but we had a great trip right here in our home state.

Precious memories

skate comic about aids to memory

Sometimes I tell myself that I should just enjoy the moment, forget about the documentation, the weblog, the ‘zines. Just be here, now, you know. It seems narcissistic, and beside the point. I forget those long months of rain and wishing I had photos to use in my projects. What’s going to happen when Rich and Randy get tired of taking pictures of me?

Oops. I got confused about direction in panel two, someone pointed it out on Skate and Annoy. I fixed it.
